Difference Co-Array Based Underdetermined DOA Estimation Using Sparse Representation

Abstract:

Direction of arrival (DOA) estimation from the perspective of sparse signal representation has attracted tremendous attention in past years, where the underlying spatial sparsity reconstruction problem is linked to the compressive sensing (CS) framework. In this talk, we start from the basic time-domain CS-based formulation for narrowband arrays and then move to the case for recently developed methods for sparse arrays based on the co-array concept. After introducing two specifically designed structures (the two-level nested array and the co-prime array) for optimizing the virtual sensors corresponding to the difference co-array, we focus on a recently proposed scheme for efficient fourth-order difference co-array construction. The so-called expanding and shift scheme consists of two sparse subarrays, where one of them is modified and shifted according to the analysis provided. The number of consecutive lags of the new construction  at the fourth order is consistently larger than two previously proposed methods. Simulations are performed to show the improved performance by the new construction in comparison with existing structures using cumulant-based methods for non-Gaussian stationary signals.

 

Biography:

Dr. Wei Liu received his BSc (in Space Physics) and LLB (in Intellectual Property Law) from Peking University, China, in 1996 and 1997, respectively, MPhil from the University of Hong Kong in 2001, and PhD from the School of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton, UK, in 2003. He then worked as a postdoc first at Southampton and later at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Imperial College London. Since September 2005, he has been with the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Sheffield, UK, first as a Lecturer and then a Senior Lecturer. He has published more than 250 journal and conference papers, three book chapters, and a research monograph about wideband beamforming "Wideband Beamforming: Concepts and Techniques" (John Wiley, March 2010). Another book about low-cost smart antennas will appear in early 2019 ("Low-cost Smart Antennas", ISBN: 978-1-119-42277-8, Wiley-IEEE Press). His area of research covers a wide range of topics in signal processing, with particular focus on sensor array signal processing and its various applications in wireless communications, radar, sonar, satellite navigation, human computer interface, and big data analytics.

He is a Senior Member of IEEE, an elected member of the Digital Signal Processing Technical Committee of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society and the Sensor Array and Multichannel Signal Processing Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (elected Vice-Chair from January 2019). He is currently an Associate Editor for IEEE Trans. on Signal Processing and IEEE Access, and an editorial board member of the Journal Frontiers of Information Technology and Electronic Engineering. He was the general co-chair for the 2018 IEEE Sensor Array and Multichannel Signal Processing Workshop, 8-11 July, Sheffield, UK.
