1. Introduction of the Subject
The subject has a primary discipline doctorate authorization and post-doctoral research stations. It has 39 tutors for doctor and 54 tutors for master. Among them there is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, one Chang Jiang Specially-appointed Professor awarded by the National Ministry of Education, four National Crackerjack Youths, one 973 Chief Scientist. The subject is based on modern communication theory and modern signal processing theory. The main research fields are optic fiber communication, figures and data communication, HDTV, satellite communication, information security, wireless communication and personal communication, image communication, multimedia information communication, broad - band networking technology, multimedia signal processing, radar signal processing and so on. It has State Key Laboratory of Advanced Optical Communication Systems and Networks, National Engineering Research Center of Digital TV, National Engineering Laboratory of Information Content Security and other scientific research bases. The department keeps close communication and cooperation with famous enterprises and universities all over the world. It also builds many joint laboratories with many academic institutions such as American AT&T Bell laboratory. The department has some fancy researching, developing and measuring instruments. It also has some test research platforms such as broadband optical fiber communication experimental network, computer image processing system, simulate environment of information security attack, defense and assessment technology. Many important research achievements such as second prize of national technology progress have been got. The department makes outstanding contributions in scientific achievement industrialization. The subject has been listed in the key built disciplines of ‘211program’ and ‘985program’ in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. One PHD thesis is elected Hundred National Excellent PHD Theses.
2. Training Objectives
Train students to get wide basic theory knowledge in information and communication. Master the development, tendency and new development frontier of the subject and other electronic relevant subjects. Have the ability to do scientific research independently and get creative research results in theory or practice. Have the ability to read the non-Chinese information skillfully. Have the ability to write articles and attend international academic exchanges. Have the ability to do the work in college education, scientific research, engineering and technology management.
3. Educational System and Credits
The length of this PhD study is 5 years, the credits must be at least 40 credits. Among them there are required courses with at least 19 credits. Students should finish their courses in first 2 years. PhD students should choose at least 1 or 2 public elective courses which are published by research institutions and not offered by first - grade subjects.

Remarks:
1) The PhD students of cross disciplines can choose one or two undergraduate courses of this term. The credits are provided by the subject. The students can apply under tutors and the subject. Submit the application to educational administration and keep in the archives. Then report to the graduate school for reference.
2) If students attend some studying aboard activities or major international academic conferences of the subject and do some academic lectures, it can be convertible to 2 credits of academic symposium.
5. Qualification Assessment
Qualification examination of direct doctoral students has to be finished before forth term. The test should follow ‘training rules of direct doctoral graduate students in Shanghai Jiao Tong University’.
6. Opening Report
The opening report of students who pass the qualification examination should be finished before the first half of fifth term. The reading amount of literature should reach 50 to 100 or even more.
7. Dissertation
1) The requirement of title selection and statement

3) The requirement of achievement innovation
8. Paper Publishing
Doctoral students should reach the publishing requirement of academic paper set by the university and the institute. It should follow the relevant documents.

The training plan should be executed from the direct doctoral graduate students of 2011.
