1. Introduction of the Subject
The subject has a primary discipline doctorate authorization and post-doctoral research stations. It has 39 tutors for doctor and 54 tutors for master. Among them there is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, one Chang Jiang Specially-appointed Professor awarded by the National Ministry of Education, four National Crackerjack Youths, one 973 Chief Scientist. The subject is based on modern communication theory and modern signal processing theory. The main research fields are optic fiber communication, figures and data communication, HDTV, satellite communication, information security, wireless communication and personal communication, image communication, multimedia information communication, broad - band networking technology, multimedia signal processing, radar signal processing and so on. It has State Key Laboratory of Advanced Optical Communication Systems and Networks, National Engineering Research Center of Digital TV, National Engineering Laboratory of Information Content Security and other scientific research bases. The department keeps close communication and cooperation with famous enterprises and universities all over the world. It also builds many joint laboratories with many academic institutions such as American AT&T Bell laboratory. The department has some fancy researching, developing and measuring instruments. It also has some test research platforms such as broadband optical fiber communication experimental network, computer image processing system, simulate environment of information security attack, defense and assessment technology. Many important research achievements such as second prize of national technology progress have been got. The department makes outstanding contributions in scientific achievement industrialization. The subject has been listed in the key built disciplines of ‘211program’ and ‘985program’ in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. One PHD thesis is elected Hundred National Excellent PHD Theses.
2. Training Objectives
Train students to get wide basic theory and systematically academic knowledge in Information and Communication field. Master the new technology, development tendency and international academic frontier of the Information Communication subject and other electronic science relevant subjects. Have the ability to do research which has higher academic value or application value independently and also have creative ability and fruits. Students should grasp a foreign language skillfully and have the ability to write and attend international academic exchanges. Have the ability to do education work or technical work.
3. Study period and Credits
The length of academic master students is two and a half years. The credits must be at least 30 credits. Among them required courses must be at least 19 credits. In principle master students should finish their courses in their first year.

Remarks:
The academic master students of cross disciplines can choose one or two undergraduate courses of this term. he credits are provided by the subject. The students can apply under tutors and the subject. Submit the application to educational administration and keep in the archives. Then report to the graduate school for reference.
5. Mid-term Examination
The mid-term examination of master students should be finished in the first month of the third term. The basic requirement of master’s mid-term examination: Have a Correct attitude of study. Finish all the courses provided by the training plan and the grades are all qualified. The finished credits of all courses and degree courses should reach or exceed the lowest training requirement. The grade point average can’t be lower than 2.00. The dissertation goes well.
6. Opening Report
The opening report of master students should be finished after the mid-term examination and before the third term. The report should follow the ‘rules in training work of master students in Shanghai Jiao Tong University’.
