Biography

Prof. Tao received the B.S. degree in electronic engineering from Fudan University, Shanghai, China, in 1999, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and electronic engineering from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2003. She is currently a Distinguished Professor with the Department of Electronic Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Prior to that, she was a Member of Professional Staff at Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute during 2003-2004, and a Teaching Fellow then an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore from 2004 to 2007. Her research interests are in the broad area of 5G/6G wireless communications systems, with particular focuses on wireless edge learning, semantic communications, integrated communication-computing-sensing, MIMO beamforming, and channel modeling. She has published over 260 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

Prof. Tao is a Fellow of the IEEE. She receives the 2019 IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award, the 2013 IEEE Heinrich Hertz Award for Best Communications Letters, the IEEE/CIC International Conference on Communications in China (ICCC) 2015 Best Paper Award, and the International Conference on Wireless Communications and Signal Processing (WCSP) 2012 and 2022 Best Paper Awards. She also receives the 2009 IEEE ComSoc Asia-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher award.

Prof. Tao is currently a member of IEEE ComSoc GLOBECOM/ICC Technical Content (GITC) Committee. She has served for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications for many years, first as an associate editor, then as a member of the Executive Editorial Committee, and currently as a member of the Steering Committee. She was also on the editorial board as an editor or guest editor of a number of other journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, Proceedings of the IEEE, and IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications. She served as the TPC Co-Chair of IEEE WCSP 2024, TPC Co-chair of IEEE ICC 2023, Symposia Oversight Chair of IEEE ICC 2019, and TPC Co-Chair of IEEE/CIC ICCC 2014.
