Abstract:

The last two decades have witnessed a fast and successful penetration of wireless communications into people’s daily life. Ubiquity of wireless communications has on one hand influenced people’s lifestyle and on the other generates more demands for new services. Along with the exponentially growing network capacity, the energy cost has also been increasing. Energy consumption of wireless communications takes about 15% of that from the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, the 5th largest energy consuming industry cluster. It has therefore attracted a lot of attention recently from government agencies, standardization organizations, industry, and academia to look for ways to improve the energy efficiency while increasing the capacity. In this talk, we discuss approaches to improve the energy efficiency through cooperative communications, a.k.a. Green Cooperative Communications. Specifically, we look at using joint network channel coding, inter-node cooperative processing, inter-cell coordinated napping, and inter-network cooperation to improve the energy efficiency. The design challenges will also be discussed.

Sumei SUN obtained her B.Sc.(Honours), M.Eng, and Ph.D degrees from Peking University, Nanyang Technological University, and National University of Singapore, respectively. She's been with Institute for Infocomm Research since 1995. She is the Head of Modulation & Coding Department since 2007. Her research interests lie in digital communication systems in general and specifically in signal processing, coding and modulation techniques, and cross-layer optimization for communication systems. Her recent research focus is on energy efficient multiuser cooperative MIMO systems, joint source-channel processing for wireless multimedia communications, integration of renewable energy into wireless networks, and wireless transceiver design.

Dr Sun has authored and co-authored more than one hundred technical papers in prestigious IEEE journals and conferences. She is co-recipient of IEEE PIMRC'2005 Best Paper Award. She’s inventor and co-inventor of over twenty patents and patent applications, many of which have been licensed to industry with multi-million dollar licensing returns. For her achievement in technology invention and industry contribution, she and her team was honored with the Scientist-Entrepreneur Award from the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR) in 2008.

Dr Sun has served as the TPC Chair of 12th IEEE International Conference on Communications in 2010 (ICCS 2010), General Co-Chair of 7th (2010) and 8th (2011) IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Asia Pacific Wireless Communications Symposium (APWCS), and Track Co-Chair of Transmission Technologies, IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC) 2012 Spring. She has also served as TPC members for a number of prestigious IEEE conferences, for example, ICC, Globecom, WCNC, PIMRC, VTC, etc. She’s been actively contributing to IEEE publications and is serving now as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, and Editor of the inaugural IEEE Wireless Communication Letters. She receives the “Top Associate Editor” recognition from IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology in 2012 and 2013.
