5G standard consists of 3 distinctive classes of use cases: enhanced
Mobile BroadBand (eMBB), Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communication (URLLC)
and massive Machine-Type Communication (mMTC). The first release, Rel-15, focus
on initial need of eMBB as well as forward compatibility to prepare for future
use cases and technologies. The second release, Rel-16, further addresses the
needs of the verticals coming into the eco-system. Currently in the middle of
the Rel-16 specification development, 3GPP aims at freezing the physical layer
design by March 2020 and moving forward to Release 17.
In this talk, we first give a brief introduction to Rel-15 standard
and recent status on selected Rel-16 topics. Furthermore, some potential Rel-17
work areas and topics will also be addressed. We try the best to bridge the gap
between academia and industry.
